REDDING, Calif. - On a rainy and gloomy day to begin the 2019 season that included a venue change to Big League Dreams of Redding, the Red Hawks had a little bit of magic to pick up the game one victory in the two game series against Corban University.
With the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the 7th inning down 3 runs,
Madison Wright did what she has done in her entire Simpson career; come up clutch. Wright launched a walk-off grand slam to give Simpson the upset win to beat the 16th ranked Warriors, 5-4.
Sydney Moorhead pitched well in her first outing in 2019 tallying six strikeouts in the one run comeback victory.
In game two, Corban came to life, coming from behind in the 6th inning scoring three runs that gave them the lead and the win.
Courtney Clevenger went 2-3 with two big RBIs to give Simpson the lead in the 5th inning, but the Warriors remained calm despite being down in the late innings scoring three times due to a couple of walks and a SU error to give them a lead that they would not relinquish.
Chardae Hoskins pitched all seven innings, but none of the runs that were given up were earned in the 4-3 loss.
The rest of the weekend was cancelled due to heavy rain, so the Red Hawks will prepare for the second weekend of the Simpson Round Robin tournament as SU will face Concordia University and Oregon Tech beginning on Feb. 9th at noon at the Simpson Softball Field.
