No. 7 Antelope Valley Sweeps Simpson

LANCASTER, Calif. - The Simpson Red Hawks opened up their conference season this weekend against the 7th ranked team in the NAIA, University of Antelope Valley. The Pioneers were able to pull off the three game sweep of Simpson, 5-3, 11-4, 14-6.

Cody Coggins returned to the starting rotation for Simpson in game one, throwing five and two-thirds innings and only giving up two earned runs in the quality start. A four run sixth inning for Antelope Valley was costly for Simpson in the two run loss.  The Red Hawks were able to get one run in each of the 7th, 8th and 9th frames, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback. Nathan Minami and Michael Driscoll both tallied two hits for the game to lead the Simpson bats.

Simpson struggled to shut down UAV's offense to start game two as they scored seven runs in the first two innings. The Red Hawks didn't counter until the 3rd when Nate Minami doubled home Creed Smith and Joshua Hernandez. Simpson would then score once in the 4th and again in the 6th. Despite the Red Hawks recording more hits than UAV, they couldn't string them together only able to score the four runs.

In the series finale, Antelope Valley notched 20 hits in the 14 run attack to pull off the sweep in a 14-6 win. Creed Smith tallied two hits and an RBI while Damien Chavez went 2-4 with two runs scored for Simpson.

The Red Hawks begin the Cal Pac at 0-3 despite playing the No. 7 team in the country tight all weekend long. Simpson will be back at home to face La Sierra University on March 1st and 3rd at Historic Tiger Field.
