Men's Basketball Drop Both Games in Bill Holtz Warrior Classic

ROCKLIN, Calif. - In a pair of contests against top GSAC opponents, the Red Hawks fell in both, first against host William Jessup, 90-71, and then against Menlo College, 78-76.

After beating William Jessup last season, the Warriors looked for immediate revenge, drilling a total of 19 three-pointers in 37 attempts. Simpson's shooting struggles wasn't enough to keep up with the red hot Warriors in the tournament opener.

In game two of the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic, SU took on former in conference opponent, Menlo College. The Oaks jumped out to a substantial lead heading into the locker room with the score 50-32. After trailing by as much as 26, the Red Hawks came roaring back. After a monster second half run that allowed Simpson to chip away at the Oaks lead, the Red Hawks had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line with less than five seconds left on the clock.

The game ended on a controversial call that disallowed a game-winning three pointer by Blake Trent because the shot didn't leave his hand in time.

Four Red Hawks finished in double digits led by Kon Anguik who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. Blake Trent, Brycen Wight, and Nathan Presnell were the other three Simpson players to score in double figures combining for 43 points.

Simpson shot a proficient 60 percent from the floor connecting on 31 of 51 shots, but only found the net on 50 percent of their free throws. Menlo got tremendous help from its depth as the Oaks received 47 bench points.

SU ran into its second straight hot shooting club, as Menlo drilled 16 shots from behind the arc. Other than the 3 point shooting advantage, all other major statistical categories were in favor of Simpson.

The Red Hawks will continue its road trip by taking on Sacramento State on November 8th at 7 PM in Simpson's first matchup with a NCAA division I opponent this year.
