REDDING, Calif. – After a hard-fought year, the Red Hawks concluded their season Sunday afternoon with a win against conference foe, La Sierra University. In a fashion similar to the series played in Riverside earlier this season, Simpson dropped the first game but asserted themselves in the next two.
The Red Hawks fell 11-2 and then went on to outscore the Golden Eagles 18-5 in the next two games, 11-2 and 7-3 respectively.
Strong play in the 2
nd and 6
th innings along with solid defense propelled the Red Hawks to victory in game two. Doubles from Derrick Kuhn and Zach Jones contributed to the strong second inning outburst, as well as singles from
Nathan Minami, Sam Nikata,
Michael Carlos, and
Thomas Ahlstrom.
The Red Hawks scored another four runs in the 6
th inning. Zach Jones hit two doubles and led the team with four RBI's.
Nathan Minami and
Wilson Kessel both registered four hits on five trips to the plate.
Micah Gunter got the win, pitching eight innings and striking out five.
More solid offensive play from Derrick Kuhn and Zach Jones would lead the Red Hawks to another victory in game three. Derrick Kuhn scored twice and finished with three RBI's on three hits in five trips to the plate. Zach Jones also finished the game with 3 RBI's. Defense was also a point of strength for the Red Hawks in game three as they held the Golden Eagles to three runs despite allowing ten hits. Three senior pitchers would take the mound in their final game for the Red Hawks.
James Humphrey got the win with a scheduled 3 inning start while striking out two batters., Zach Morgan came in as relief and recorded four strike-outs, and
Alfred Souza IV came in as relief and finished the game for the Red Hawks picking up the save.
Simpson ends the year on a high note winning its last two games and sending off seven seniors on a win.
