Simpson Grinds Out Overtime Victory

Women's Basketball Defeats Northwest Christian 59-56

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks took the floor in the James M. Grant Center Thursday night for another non-conference game with a foe from the Cascade Conference. This was Simpson's third home game in the past six days, each of them being decided by less than five points. The Red Hawks were a little slow off the jump and found themselves down 12-7 after the first five minutes of the game. A quick timeout got SU back to the game plan as they rattled off a eight point run to end the quarter.

The run continued in the second quarter as Simpson rattled off four more quick points, extending the run to 12 putting the Red Hawks up 19-12. Simpson dominated the rest off the half, and headed to the locker room with a nine point lead, 27-18.

Missed free-throws plagued the Red Hawks in the second half as Northwest Christian retook the lead in the third. Senior Madison Cox, who ended the game with a double-double led the Red Hawks offensively as they cut into the Beacons lead in the fourth quarter. After a back and forth final quarter, the Beacons managed to come back and tie the game as regulation ended, sending the game to overtime.

Simpson turned up heat on defense only allowing two points by the Beacons in the overtime period. An Alex Cooper free throw and two big buckets from Madison Cox and Estella Gutierrez put the game away for the Red Hawks in overtime.

Alli Ramelli lead the Simpson scoring effort with 14 points and four rebounds and Madison Cox had her second straight double-double 13 points along with 12 rebounds.

When asked about his teams effort, head coach Derrick Pringle said "I'm extremely proud of the girls for battling through and showing their heart in grinding out this win. This is the third straight game we've played solid defense, we're holding good teams to under 60 points a night, which is one of our main goals."

The Red Hawks start the season 4-2 for the first time the 2013-14 and will continue their home stand on Saturday as William Jessup University comes to town with tipoff set at 6 pm.
