REDDING, Calif. - Despite a booming second half that led the Red Hawks to outscore the Lions, 50-41, they were unable to pull off the comeback win, ultimately falling just short, 90-86.
Simpson has faced some tough opponents already this season and tonight was no different. Multnomah is the top scoring NAIA team in the nation. However, SU was able to hold them to under 100 points, making them only the fourth team to do so this season. The Lions also led the country in 3 pointers made with nearly 50 per game and defensive rebounds, pulling down over 36 defensive boards per game.
Â
Coming out of the intermission, the Red Hawks found themselves down by 13. Instead of giving up, they came out strong, quickly going on a 6-0 run to bring them within seven. Every time the Lions seemed like they may run away with the lead, Simpson responded. Key rebounds and turnovers forced by the defense and being able to capitalize on the offensive side are what led SU to even take the lead 70-64.
Â
JT Branch and
Jon Manjon were the Red Hawk scoring leaders for the night, recording 20 and 19 points respectively. On defense, nearly every player got involved with deflections or steals that got Simpson out in transition.
This game was not shy to drama or action, as the last three minutes were full of nail-biting dramatics. Numerous eye opening blocks and jaw dropping dunks from Simpson made for another extremely entertaining 40 minutes.
Â
Simpson will have a two-week break before they hit the road again, this time traveling to Vallejo to face California Maritime Academy at 7:30 pm on Saturday, December 8th.
