Red Hawks "Cruz" Past Banana Slugs

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson overcame a sluggish start spotting UC Santa Cruz the first nine points of their matchup at the Heritage Center on Friday night. The Red Hawks answered with a 13-2 run and slowly gained control throughout the game to pull away to an impressive 70-59 victory outscoring the visitors 21-13 in the final quarter.

The win, Simpson's fourth in its last five games, was sparked by a tenacious pressure defense that converted 20 Slug turnovers into 21 points on the offensive end for SU. Esther Wofford led the Red Hawks with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kelsie Jurin added 15 points and eight rebounds. Emma Limburg grabbed nine rebounds to go along with her eight points. Two others, Imani Joseph and Fallon Greenhaw, each chipped in with eight points. Joseph also had three blocks.

The win avenged an earlier loss at Santa Cruz for Simpson. Madison Van Zandt led the Banana Slugs with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Simpson returns to Cal-Pac Conference action on Thursday in a showdown for first place in the league standings. The Red Hawks play host to UC Merced at 5:30 p.m. The Bobcats handed Simpson its only conference defeat this season.
