Simpson Edged by Maritime in Semifinals

VALLEJO, Calif. - With a final chance to tie the game trailing by three points, the clock expired before the Red Hawks could get a shot at sending the Cal Pac semifinal game at Cal Maritime into an extra period and the Keelhaulers advanced with a 53-50 victory Sunday.

A game that was tight throughout, Simpson held a nine-point lead with two minutes left in the third quarter, but could not hold the lead after both Kelsie Jurin and Imani Joseph fouled out in the fourth period. With the Red Hawks limited by foul difficulties, the Keelhaulers mounted an 8-1 run over the remainder of the third, and SU headed to the fourth up by a basket.

The back-and-forth battle extended the final 10 minutes, but a quick 4-0 run by Maritime pushed a one-point lead into a 52-47 edge that the Red Hawks could not overcome. Esther Wofford nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 52-50 with eight seconds to play. After fouling and a missed and made free throw by the hosts, Simpson had one final chance to send the game into overtime. The final buzzer sounded before SU got an open look at the basket.

Wofford was the only Red Hawk to reach double figures with 11 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Jordan Mootz for the Keelhaulers was instrumental in sending Maritime to the finals finishing with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The contest was the final one in the career for Emma Limburg and Amber Huffhines.
