Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Rally Sinks Red Hawk Men's Soccer on Senior Day

REDDING, Calif. -- With two goals within a three-minute span in last six minutes of the game, UC Merced rallied for a 2-1 victory over Simpson on Senior Day at the Simpson Soccer Field.

Cody Beaumont's rebound strike in the 43rd minute gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead, and it nearly held up in th season finale for Simpson in a 2016 year that saw the team grab the most victories in nearly a decade. The seven wins posted this season was the most since a 10-win season in 2008 for Simpson. The five Cal Pac victories served as the most since the 2012 season when the Red Hawks also posted five triumphs.

Simpson entered the day needing a victory over the league's number two team in Merced and some help from others in the conference to possibly finish in a tie for third place in the Cal Pac standings. The loss drops the Red Hawks' finish at a tie for fifth place with La Sierra.

Merced, which was receiving votes in the national coaches poll and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's league tournament, found itself needing a rally to defeat a determined Simpson eleven.

Beaumont's goal gave Simpson all the momentum at the end of the first half. And the defensive effort in the second half, led by goalkeeper Michael Jones, nearly pulled off the upset for SU.

Merced tied the match on Estevan Salgado's equalizer in the 85th minute, and Salgado again tallied three minutes later for the game-winner.

Jones, in his final appearance in a Red Hawk uniform along with seniors Mitchell Boyle, Noah Miranda, James Lemus, and Christian Fuqua, faced 29 total shots and made 16 saves.
