Red Hawks Let Slugs Slide Past in Fourth Quarter

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Simpson's women's basketball team led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter Friday night at UC Santa Cruz, but the Banana Slugs used a pair of big runs, 9-0 and 8-0, in the final stanza to hand the Red Hawks a 66-62 defeat at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Esther Wofford led three SU players in double figures with 15 points.

Trailing by four at the intermission, 33-29, Simpson rallied to carry a 54-47 lead into the fourth quarter outscoring the Slugs 25-14 in the third. A basket by Amber Huffhines gave SU a 56-47 lead before UCSC tied the score with a 9-0 run. 

The hosts took the lead for good with 4:12 remaining to start an 8-0 run that proved to be the decisive stretch of the game. Imani Joseph's two free throws with 1:24 to play cut the lead to 64-60, but the Red Hawks would pull no closer before the final horn.

Fallon Greenhaw added 14 points, and Emma Limburg 10 for Simpson.

The Red Hawks return home Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. to face La Sierra in the Cal-Pac home opener at the Heritage Center.
