SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Simpson Flag Football team made history today as they punched their first postseason ticket in program history with a 32-6 victory over Ottawa in Surprise, AZ.
The Red Hawks jumped out to the early 7-0 lead in the first quarter as quarterback
Sophia Wright connected with
Taylor Zalunardo for a four-yard touchdown pass.
Simpson took the commanding 26-0 lead into halftime as they put up 19 points in the second quarter.
They extended their largest lead of the game to 32 points as they found the endzone once more in the third quarter.
The deficit proved too much for Ottawa as they notched a touchdown in the final quarter before falling 32-6.
Sophia Wright passed for three touchdown passes while adding a rushing touchdown. On the receiving end,
Debora Aguirre hauled in six catches for 66 yards and two touchdown receptions.
The Red Hawks' defense proved to be stout as they picked off four passes and allowed only six points.
Taylor Zalunardo led the defense with 12 stops, two sacks, and one interception.
Calia Johnson,
Kylie Schultz, and
Tyra Drake each notched an interception.
With the win, Simpson punched their first playoff berth in program history in their first year of play. Coach Rob Harley and the Simpson Flag Football teams look to get ready for the GSAC Conference Tournament that is set to begin next week Arpil 16-17 in Glendale, AZ.
