REDDING, Calif. - Pitching duels between Simpson and the University of British Columbia highlighted the first day of play as both teams combined for five runs on the day.
The Red Hawks drew first blood in the first inning as they plated the game's first run on an error by the Thunderbirds before
Madison Chapman extended the Red Hawks' lead in the second inning on a RBI single into left field.
Nayzeth Gonzalez added an insurance run in the fourth inning on an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score
Ariel Schulzkump.
The Thunderbirds plated one run in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI double into the left-center gap by Brielle Donoghue.
However, the story of the game belonged to starter
Jacquelyn Lujan. Lujan earned the complete game victory as she allowed one run while scattering five hits.
Gonzalez, Chapman, and Schulzkump led the Simpson bats with two-hit performances as they accounted for two RBIs.
Game 2:
The strong pitching performances between the Red Hawks and Thunderbirds continued as UBC jumped on the board in the first inning after stringing together three straight hits with two outs. Mattea Burrill gave the Thunderbirds the early lead with an RBI single back up the middle.
One run proved to be the difference as UBC starter Carleen Murray tossed the complete game shutout to preserve the 1-0 victory as she allowed just two hits.
Simpson's
Grace Chojnacki took the tough loss as she fired 7.0 innings while allowing just one run.
The Red Hawks put the tying run on base to begin the bottom of the seventh inning before Murray induced back-to-back groundouts to end the game, which included a 6-3 double play.
First pitch for tomorrow's twin-bill is scheduled for 11 am with a non-conference fourth game to follow.
