Simpson Flag Football notches first win program history, splits the first day of play in the Jamboree

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Simpson Flag Football team began the first day of play at the Flag Football Jamboree in Riverside, CA, today with a statement win over Ottawa (AZ) 32-0, to make program history. 

Red Hawks quarterback Sophia Wright had a field day as she tossed for five touchdown passes while completing 51% of her pass attempts for 195 yards. 

Debora Aguirre proved to be Wright's go-to target as Aguirre notched a team-high five receptions for 58 yards and four touchdown receptions. Wright's fifth touchdown pass came on a 32-yard pitch and catch to Imani Watkins

Taylor Zalunardo led the defense with seven stops while adding a pass breakup, Watkins posted an interception, and Dania Grier registered one sack and four stops. 

The Red Hawks' defense held Ottawa in check as they allowed 101 total yards while allowing only 11 yards on the ground. 

Game 2: 

The Red Hawks dropped the night cap as they fell 32-13 against Arizona Christian to conclude the first day of play. 

The Firestorm took the early lead and never looked back as they held the 25-0 lead into halftime. 

A 21-yard rushing touchdown on the ground by Alexye Cedillo got the Red Hawks on the board to begin the second half before they added one more late score on a four-yard scamper by Wright before the Firestorm closed out the 32-13 victory. 

Zalunardo had a big game on both sides of the ball as she hauled in seven passes for 107 yards while leading the defense with seven total stops. Kylie Schultz posted a team-high 11 receptions for 79 yards through the air. 

Simpson looks to get back in the win column tomorrow as they take on Benedictine, Mesa at 11 am.
