REDDING, Calif. - The Mountaineers completed the four-game sweep over the Red Hawks today as they took game one 8-2 and game two 18-9.
Game one remained a pitcher's duel between Simpson's
Grace Chojnacki and Eastern Oregon's Maliyah Mann. Both pitchers combined to allow just three total base runners and one hit over the first three innings of the game.
The Mountaineers struck first in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Elizabeth Heinz, before the Red Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single into the left center alley by Brianna Lopze-Cortez.
Eastern Oregon broke the tie in the fifth inning on a three-run blast by Hope Burke before the Mountaineers added an insurance run in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1.
Simpson threatened in the bottom of the sixth as they plated one run and brought the tying run to the plate. But the Mountaineers escaped the jam and added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Heinz to take the first game 8-2.
Kassandra Soria led the Simpson bats with a two-hit game as Chojnacki took the no-decision, as she scattered two hits and one run over 4.0 innings of work. Reliever
Jacquelyn Lujan took the loss as she allowed seven runs over 2.1 innings of work before handing the ball to
Jessica Ulshoeffer.
Maliyah Mann notched her 10th win of the year as Heinz went a perfect three-for-three with three RBIs, while Burkee added a two-for-four game while driving in three runs.
Game 2:
The final game of the series proved to be an offensive onslaught between the Red Hawks and Mountaineers as they combined for 26 hits and 27 runs.
The Mountaineers scored in the first four-innings of the game to take a commanding 16-2 lead. The Mountaineers' big inning came in the third, as they plated eight runs off seven hits and one Simpson error. Raygun Klippert notched a two-run double into left-center while Lexi Grumbois, Heinz, and Burke all posted RBI knocks.
The help of two Mountaineers errors allowed the Red Hawks to explode for seven runs in the fifth inning to move Simpson out of run-rule territory.
Adriana Delaney highlighted the Simpson bats in the fifth as she notched two hits in the inning, including a two-run triple into right center.
Grumbois laced a two-run shot into right field to put the run-rule back into effect the next half inning as they closed out the bottom of the sixth inning to preserve the 18-9 victory in six innings.
Emily Placencia and Delaney paced the Simpson offense with two-hit performances as they combined for three RBIs.
The Mountaineers offense tallied 15 hits as Klippert, Grumbois, Burke, and Brylin Field all posted multi-hit games.
Natalie Dimitrov earned the win on the mound as she worked 2.1 inning sof work while allowing just two earned runs. Simpson starter
Lily Rojas suffered the loss as she allowed six runs over 2.0 innings of work before handing the ball to the Simpson bullpen.
Simpson looks to hit the road this week as they travel to Portland, OR to take on Warner Pacific.
