REDDING, Calif. The men's baseball team welcomed Cascade Conference Opponent Corban University for a four-game set this weekend.
The Warriors drew first blood as they plated three runs in the first two innings of play, off four hits and one Red Hawk error.
A one-out single by
Andrew Sherrell in the fourth inning jump-started a one-out rally as back-to-back hit by pitches to
Zion Palea and
Duke Aloy loaded the bases.
Shortstop
Eric Mora had the game-changing swing as he belted a grand slam to left field to give Simpson the one-run lead.
Starter
Gage Hoyle contained the Corban bats as he allowed four runs over 6.0 innings of work, as he left the game with the no-decision.
But the Warriors made some noise as they got into the Simpson bullpen and plated three runs in the seventh off Red Hawk relievers to take the 7-4 lead.
Simpson answered back in the bottom of the eighth inning as
Mario Catalan pulled Simpson within two on a sacrifice fly, and
Bo Valladao tied the game with a bases-loaded two-run single.
The Warriors regained the lead as they plated one run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly before
Chandler Jones ended the threat with his fourth strikeout of the game.
Simpson answered again as Mora came through with the game-tying RBI single into left field.
The Corban defense made a stellar play to keep the game tied in the bottom of the tenth inning as they cut down the winning run on a strike to the plate from right fielder Sean Shaffer.
But Mora played hero as he drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch to drive home the winning run to complete the 9-8 game one victory.
Mora proved to be a force in game one as he posted a team-high three hits and six RBIs.
Nathan Palacioz earned his first win of the year as he fired one inning of work and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam.
Game 2:
The Red Hawks looked to complete the day one sweep as they drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning, as a one-out triple by Valladao helped set up an RBI single by
Nui Sato.
Simpson added four more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as they plated four runs on three hits and one Corban error, as
Cayden Lee highlighted the inning with a two-run double down into the left field corner.
This proved to be more than enough runs for starter
Daniel Aceto as he picked up his first win of the year, firing 7.0 innings of shutout baseball while scattering four hits.
Reliever
Qorey Houston put the finishing touches on game two as he fired 2.0 innings of one-run ball to preserve the 5-1 victory.
Valladao and
Cesar Ortega led the offense with two hit performances as Ortega worked his way on base three times.
Simpson looks to complete the sweep tomorrow as the first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 am.
