Simpson's
Owen Boesiger and
Kaiden Dinning took advantage of the first week of winter break with a couple of days fishing at a local lake. The first day on the water resembled a bluebird sky day with little to no wind. "We knew that the fish were going to be tough to convince before we even got to the lake," Dinning explained.
Early in our the duo caught a couple of fish utilizing the Lowrance Active Target 2 and a variety of minnow baits. Around mid-day, Dinning made a cast at a fish that proved to be a big one. "It slowly swam over to my bait and, to my surprise, ate it. The fish ended up weighing just under 7 pounds, the biggest bass of my life. A fish weighing 7 pounds is awesome, but the fact that it was a Spotted Bass made it even cooler. " By the end of the day, the two anglers had a sack of spotted bass weighing a total of 21.33 pounds.
The two returned the following day as they embraced better weather conditions; the first day of the large storm California experienced. Dinning set a goal to help land his partner's largest bass ever, "The goal we set out with was to get Owen his personal best Spotted Bass. His previous personal best was 4 and a half pounds, and with how the lake had been fishing for us, we knew this goal was reasonable."
The two started the day at the same spot where Dinning caught his trophy fish. The spot proved successful as Dinnings' first cast of the day resulted in a 5 and a half pounder. However, the rest of the day proved to be very underwhelming, and the goal seemed unattainable. But the tides turned for the two as Owen landed his trophy catch, "The very last spot we pulled up to, Owen casted at a fish that ended up being his personal best. This one weighed 5 and a half pounds, a very relieving fish, knowing that our goal was accomplished."
Dinning exemplified the importance of the gear that they used during the two-day fishing trip, "The Gear that helped us catch these fish was a key factor in both our success and confidence. We both were running the same line, which was a 15-pound high-vis braid to 10 Pound P-Line Tactical Fluorocarbon for our leader line. Having confidence in the line was very important because these spotted bass pull very hard."
While the different types of bait utilized had monumental effects, "The baits we used to catch these fish varied, but the jighead we used remained the same. We were using either a 3/16 oz or ¼ oz Frenzy Baits FFS Stroller Head. If we could get away with it, we would use the ¼ oz head to get down to the fish faster, but if they were being stingy, we would switch to the 3/16 oz head for a more natural presentation."
The final element to spice up the bait had tremendous effects in luring the two catches. "The last key to success was Pro-Cure Trophy Bass Super-Gel. We learned early on that we would have a lot of fish follow our bait but not commit to it. Once the scent was added, it really made a difference in the fish committing to our baits." It proved to be an eventful fishing trip between the two Red Hawk anglers as they learned the ropes and tried different lines and baits to land two trophy fishes.Â
