Red Hawks Fall to the Saints on the Road

HELENA, Mont. - The Red Hawks football squad took on future Frontier Conference member Carroll College at Nelson Stadium in Helena, MT this afternoon.

The Saints drew first blood on the games-opening drive as they marched 75 yards on 10 plays to take the early 7-0 lead.

Following a Red Hawks punt the Saints looked to extend its lead as they moved into redzone territory.

But the Red Hawk defense stalled the Saint's drive as a huge play by linebacker Kasey Mena forced a Saints field goal attempt as he came flying through the line of scrimmage to make a big tackle for loss.

Simpson looked to get on the board in its second possession as a big third down catch by wideout Nathaniel Montecelli helped SU keep its drive alive as Simpson picked up its first, first down of the game.

However, after a six-play drive, the Red Hawks could not convert on a third and medium to keep its drive alive.

The Saint's offense continued to click as they extended its lead on a five 61-yard drive to make it a 17-0 Saints lead after one-quarter of play.

The Red Hawk's offense came out clicking to begin the second quarter as they converted on a huge first down by a catch and run by Donovan Castillo as he made an exclusive juke to evade a Carroll defender to move the chains.

As they marched into Saints territory for the first time, Simpson looked to convert on a fourth and short. But the Carroll secondary hauled in a huge interception to put the Saints back into Red Hawks territory.

Carroll kept the momentum rolling as they found the endzone on a three-play drive to extend its lead.

The Saints tried to catch Simpson off guard on the kickoff with an onside kick but a heads-up play by wide receiver James Webster secured the kick.

Following a three-and-out, the Saints added seven more points on a seven-play 53-yard drive.

A big penalty at the end of the Saints drive allowed Simpson to have excellent field position to begin its drive.

A three-yard scramble by quarterback Kaleb Anderson on third and short moved the ball near midfield. But the Saint's defense forced a turnover on downs on the Saint's side of the field to keep the Red Hawks off the board.

A quick score by the Saints right before the half allowed the Saints to take the commanding 38-0 lead going into the half.

A Saint's miscue on the kickoff allowed the Red Hawks with good starting field position as they looked for a quick score to end the first half.

A scramble by Kaleb Anderson drew a key face mask penalty that put Simpson back into Saints territory.

Following an 11-yard completion to Dominique Ruff, Simpson garnished its best field position of the first half as they marched to the Saint's 33-yard line.

The Saint's defense prevailed as they forced a turnover on downs on a big pass breakup that Monticelli nearly brought in for a big conversion.

Carroll College came out firing in the second half as they scored on back-to-back drives before the Red Hawks defense forced a turnover on downs late in the third quarter.

The Saints threatened before a big tackle for loss by Daniel Miles on first down helped set up a second and long.

The Red Hawks' defense forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to stall the Saint's drive.

The Red Hawk offense orchestrated its longest drive of the day as they went 47 yards on eight plays into Saints territory. A couple of big catches by tight end Trevor Thomas put the Red Hawks just outside of the Saint's red zone.

But an interception in the endzone by the Carroll College secondary ended the drive.

The Saints looked to add to its lead as they drove down the field into the Red Hawks red zone. But the Red Hawks' defense forced its first takeaway of the game as Jonathan Scott recovered a fumble to end the Saint's threat.

However, the Red Hawks could not get on the board as they fell to its future Frontier opponent Carroll College.

Simpson's offense could not get on the board but 5-12 drives on the day crossed into Saints territory.

Tight End Trevor Thomas had a team-high 39 yards off five catches.

Linebacker Kase Mena had a solid game on the defensive side of the ball as he had a team-high seven tackles and two tackles for loss.

The Red Hawks look to bounce back this week as they take on D3 opponent Williamette University.
