REDDING, Calif. - Simpson dropped the doubleheader today against D2 opponent Cal Poly Humboldt, 14-0 and 11-4.
The Lumberjacks jumped early on Simpson starter
Jacquelyn Lujan.
Humboldt chased Lujan in the second inning after they put up five runs in the first two innings.
Sophomore
Jessica Ulshoeffer came in relief to try and quiet the Lumberjack's bats.
However, the Lumberjacks proved too hot as they pounded out 14 runs off eight hits. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Kayley Vaillette led the Red Hawks offense with two hits in two trips to the plate.
Nicolena Holen owned the lone extra-base hit of the game for the Red Hawks as she doubled in the left-center gap in the fifth inning.
Game 2:
Coach Stower handed senior
Kylee Potes the ball in game two.
The southpaw ran into some early traffic in the second inning as she worked around a one-out double.
Potes escaped the bases-loaded jam unscathed after issuing a flyout to end the inning.
However, the Lumberjacks chased Potes in her third inning of work as they platted six runs.
Katelyn Thomasson came in relief of Potes to help limit the damage.
The Red Hawks scratched across its first run of the day after a leadoff double by
Madeline Moorhead came across to score on a
Kayley Vaillette single.
Cal Poly answered back in the top half of the fourth inning with a run to extend its lead, 7-1.
Simpson found some magic off its bench as pinch hitter
Elyse Benson worked a one-out walk followed by a pinch-hit two-run bomb by
Jillian Walker to pull Simpson within four.
But another crooked number by the Lumberjacks put the mercy rule in effect as they headed into the bottom half of the fifth inning down 11-3.
With two outs and its backs against the wall, Vaillette got aboard on an infield single.
Pinch hitter
Adriana Delaney doubled as she split the right-center gap to score Vaillette from first base and continue the game.
However, the Red Hawks were unable to catch the Lumberjacks as they fell 11-4.
Kayley Vaillette continued to stay hot as she led the Red Hawks in game two with two hits and one RBI. Vaillette finished the day going 4-6 with one RBI and four singles.

Nicolena Holen all recorded one-hit performances to round out Simpson's offense.
The Red Hawks look to get in the win column as they take on Corban in a doubleheader this Monday starting at 11 AM.
