LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Red Hawks football squad took on future Frontier Conference member Eastern Oregon University today.
The Mountaineers grabbed the early lead as they scored on its first three possessions of the game to take the 21-0 lead.
The Simpson defense made its first stop of the game in the second quarter as they forced a three-and-out.
Jabari Reynolds and Nicholas Bañuelos combined for a huge tackle for loss as they stuffed the Mountaineer quarterback behind the line of scrimmage to force a punt.
But the Red Hawks looked to chip away as they got on the board right before the half as they marched 72 yards on eight plays.
Ezekiel Anderson started the drive with back-to-back runs that included a 44-yard burst to move Simpson just outside of the Mountaineer red zone.
A huge fourth-down run by quarterback
Kaleb Anderson helped Simpson move the chains to keep the drive alive.
Kaleb Anderson made a heads-up play as he recovered a loose ball and scampered into the endzone for a 5-yard rushing touchdown to get Simpson on the board.
However, the Mountaineers kept Simpson off the board in the second half as they padded its lead to take the game 61-7.
Mikah Kindell had another solid week on the ground as he had a team-high 76 yards which included a 33-yard burst.
Nathaniel Monticelli and
Trevor Thomas combined for eight receptions from 81 yards.
Kai Santos had a team-high 11 tackles to go along with one pass breakup.
Nicholas Bañuelos followed close behind as he notched eight tackles and one pass breakup.
Simpson looks to be back in action this Saturday as they take on Pacific Northwest Christian College at 1 pm.
