MENLO, Calif. - The Red Hawks' bats highlighted the great pitching performances this weekend as they took three of four from Menlo.

Simpson's first series win began with a great start from Eric Winchester and ended with Logan Gomes hitting two home runs on the weekend.

Winchester pitched a gem in the first game of the series. He threw six no-hit innings until giving up his first hit in the 7th inning. Winchester went seven innings with four strikeouts and one earned run.

Logan Gomes–the Red Hawks' power bat–sparked Simpson’s offense, hitting a home run in the 2nd inning. The Red Hawks' big inning came in the seventh when right fielder Titus Sato hit an RBI single to score Braxton King. Shortstop Mickey Nunes doubled–scoring two more runners. Nunes would score after an RBI single by Tuli Taufahema to put Simpson up 5-0. Two more runs would score in the 8th from a Titus Sato triple, scoring Brett Johnson and Max Lopez.

Relief Pitcher Dylan Cabral closed out the game in the final two innings to secure Simpson's first win of the weekend, 7-2.

In game two, third baseman Max Lopez hit his first homer of the season to put the Red Hawks on top in the 2nd inning. Lopez led the Red Hawks’ offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Starting pitcher Eddie Avalos grinded out his first win of the year, pitching four innings in the seven-inning game. Avalos fell into trouble in the 5th inning, letting up three runs. Reliever Pedro Regalado got out of the jam with a flyout, strikeout, and another flyout to end the inning.

Cabral came in to close his second game with a quick one, two, three inning to beat the Oaks 6-4 and earn his first save of the season.

The Red Hawks’ strong pitching performance continued in the third game. Starter Connor Caporale pitched five innings with seven strikeouts and three earned runs.

Simpson turned the game around in the 9th inning after trailing 6-3. Taufahema scored on a wild pitch to start the rally for the Red Hawks. Lopez grounded out, allowing Gomes to score and Micah Kele to advance to third base. Braxton King hit the game-tying sacrifice fly to score Gomes. Brady Meeds scored two runners with a clutch double to put SU up 8-6.

The Red Hawks could not complete the comeback when two pass balls allowed Menlo to score two runs in the 9th inning, tying the game. In the bottom of the 10th inning, a third-passed ball walked it off for Menlo. The final score was 9-8.

However, Simpson bounced back in the fourth game after the starting pitcher Jaydon Tomas, pitched five shutout innings. Gabriel Rojas completed the shutout in the final two innings of the seven-inning game.

Offensively, Gomes’ bat continued to do damage hitting a three-run home run in the third inning.

The Red Hawks took game four from Menlo 8-0.

SU will travel to William Jessup this Tuesday, Feb. 14, to play one game starting at 1 p.m.
