ANGWIN, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball picked up a victory in the first game of the conference schedule over Pacific Union on the road 88-68.
The Red Hawks never trailed in the game and led by as much as 28 at one point late in the second half as SU cruised to a 1-0 start.
"I'm really proud of the guys for not just making it a one-on-one competition but actually running sets all the way through and getting the ball from side to side and then inside out," Coach
Todd Franklin said.
Offensively, SU was virtually unstoppable knocking down 56 percent for the game including 65 percent in the second half.
Gary Mims led the Red Hawks offensively with 20 points on just 11 shots and brought down eight rebounds.
Javonntie Jackson also recorded 16 points and
Morgan Cox and Aaron Burt combined for 25 points. Daylon Potts provided a spark off the bench once again with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
"Daylon's energy was absolutely amazing tonight," Coach Franklin says. "Anytime someone off the bench has a double-double, you're going to have a chance to win."
On the defensive end, SU held PUC to 38 percent from the floor and did a great job closing out on shooters from beyond the arc. PUC was only able to connect on 31 percent of 3-pointers.
A win on the road to begin conference play is a massive start for the Red Hawks and Simpson improves 4-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in Cal Pac play.
SU will return to non-conference play before the Cal Pac heats up on December 1st.
