ANGWIN, Calif. - The Red Haws secured another conference win Saturday night defeating the PUC Pioneers 83-81.
SU took an eight point lead into the locker room at the half and extended their lead to double digits multiple times in the second half. The Pioneers, however, let the their resilience show and slowly marched back as the second half came to a close. Much like the Red Hawks did at home against UC Merced earlier in the week, PUC put together a run with three point shooting and solid defense down the stretch. SU was able to score late in the second half to keep the Pioneers at bay, and with a PUC three at the buzzer coming up short the Red Hawks had secured their third conference victory.
Simpson's starting lineup did most of the heavy lifting as the trio of Blake Trent, Nathan Presell, and Dylan Banks combined for 61 of the Red Hawks 83 points.
Blake Trent continues to impress in his senior season. Trent was on fire from three drilling 7 of 10 from behind the arc. The sharpshooter led the Red Hawks in scoring on the night with 27 along with five rebounds. Trent has learned to love playing on the road as of late, scoring more than 20 points in two of the last three games, both of those performances coming in opposing team gymnasiums.
Freshman Nathan Presell posted another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. In the Red Hawks last road game the Freshman got in foul trouble early but Presell had no problem staying on the floor tonight and making his presence felt.
Dylan Banks also had himself a night scoring 15 points to go with 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Banks shot 6-6 from the free throw stripe to compliment his near double-double performance.
SU's 3-2 record is good for second place in the Cal Pac Conference standings. The Red Hawks only trail the 5-0 Pioneers of Antelope Valley in the rankings, making Thursday's matchup at home much more interesting for Simpson as it will surely have post-season implications.
