REDDING, Calif. - After beginning the day in the winner's bracket, the Simpson University Red Hawks lost two consecutive games and are now knocked out of the Cal Pac Championship Tournament.
The Red Hawks faced the top seed, Marymount California University in game one as the Mariners' bats were too much for SU in the 10-1 loss. Simpson began the game with a 1-0 lead as
Chardae Hoskins scored on
Mia Olvera single, but Marymount quickly took advantage after a four-run first inning. Three of those runs came on a two-out, two-strike homerun by McKenna Boyle. The Mariners continued to extend their lead in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings and eventually had a large enough lead to end the game in five innings. Simpson only recorded four hits in the winner's bracket contest.
In game two, Simpson was playing for its season against a La Sierra team, who was no stranger to elimination games after beating Embry-Riddle in the first elimination game on day one. Both teams appeared to be evenly matched as the game was tied at one for four innings until La Sierra finally scored in the top of the 8th inning. Simpson was unable to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, eliminating them from the championship tournament.
The Red Hawks season comes to a close and is another successful one with a 34-15 final record after starting the season 11-7. This was the final game for seniors
Danielle Kranz and
Madison Wright. Wright was a former Cal Pac Player of the Year (2017), four time First team All-Conference member, and 2nd Team All-American (2017) in her very impressive four year career at Simpson University.
SU is only graduates two players and has lots of talent coming back, alongside some impressive new recruits, the Red Hawks are sure to be a conference contender in 2020.
