REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks took the floor Thursday night to take on conference foe Benedictine University at Mesa. For the second time this week, the Red Hawks began the game with an Alli Ramelli three and great offensive play in the first quarter. Ramelli would find the bottom of the net from distance twice in the first quarter and the starting front court of Shayla Smothers and Madison Cox both had three point plays the old fashioned way to contribute to Simpson's first quarter scoring effort. At the end of the first the Red Hawks led 25-17.
Simpson cooled offensively to start the second quarter and some frustration seemed to set in. Five minutes into the quarter the Red Hawks had only scored three points and had allowed Benedictine to tie the game at 28. The tide seemed to turn back to SU's favor after the Red Hawks executed a play called by Derrick Pringle Jr. perfectly for a wide open Estela Gutierrez three at the top of the key. Following the three the Red Hawks got out in the fast break finding easy layups and ended the half with a 39-36 lead.
Simpson put their foot on the gas to start the second half forcing Benedictine to take back to back timeouts before the five minute mark. At the end of the third the Red Hawks led 60-44.
The Red Hawks largest lead of the game came near the end of the third quarter when they took an 18 point advantage, 60-42.
In the fourth quarter Simpson would close out the game with a 84-71 win.
Five players scored in double figures for the Red Hawks. The scoring effort was led by Cox with 21 points and Gutierrez with 18. Simpson also dominated the offensive glass, registering 17 second chance points on the night. Alex Cooper owned the boards for SU pulling down 11 rebounds in 13 minutes.
The Red Hawks are now 2-0 in conference play and look to keep their five game win streak alive at home on Saturday against Embry-Riddle at 5:30 pm
